Two People You Need to Succeed

And can they be the same person?

One is an expert who trains another who is learning or improving a skill.

The other is an experienced and trusted adviser.

The coach and the mentor.

And they can be the same person.

Here are a few thoughts I have gleaned from the “all knowing” internet and some thoughts of my own.

Coaching is…
“a process that enables learning and development to occur and thus performance to improve. To be a successful a Coach requires a knowledge and understanding of process as well as the variety of styles, skills and techniques that are appropriate to the context in which the coaching takes place”

Eric Parsloe, The Manager as Coach and Mentor (1999) page 8. Eric is a respected author and Director of the OCM

Mentoring is…
“off-line help by one person to another in making significant transitions in knowledge, work or thinking”

Clutterbuck, D & Megginson, D, Mentoring Executives and Directors (1999) page 3. David Clutterbuck & David Megginson are both founder members of The European Mentoring and Coaching Council and highly respected authors, academics and consultants in the mentoring arena.

Mentoring is a long-term process based on mutual trust and respect. Coaching, on the other hand, is for a short period of time. Mentoring is more focused on creating an informal association between the mentor and mentee, whereas coaching follows a more structured and formal approach.

What is the Difference Between a Mentor and Coach? – Small …

Those are interesting ideas regarding a coach and a mentor.

In my experience both are necessary for growth – personal or otherwise.

And it is not always easy to find such people to engage in your growth.

As I look back over my experience with individuals who fulfilled one or the other role, here are some of my conclusions:

A coach must be:

Knowledgeable about the skill you are learning and growing in.

They don’t need to be the best at what you are learning but they must be masterful at understanding what it will take for you to succeed.

John Wooden is one of the most successful coaches in sports. And although he was a good student athlete his real success was as a coach. And when he was coaching he certainly wasn’t the best basketball player.

Coach Wooden was masterful in recognizing his player’s strong points and using them together as a team.

Which suggests that a good coach must be:

Skillful at recognizing your strengths and helping you maximize them.

Most of us are not good at acknowledging our strengths. We have a self defeating understanding that to acknowledge our strengths is pride.

So we end up focusing on our weaknesses. That does not help our belief and self confidence.

A good coach will direct us to build up our strengths which often counter the weaknesses.

As you see yourself as a decisive action taker, you no longer look at yourself as a procastinator.

As you see yourself growing in speaking skills, you no longer think of yourself as a timid introvert.

And a coach must give you a game plan to follow.

Coaches in football have a big decision at half time. Do they stick with the game plan or devise a new one?

Championships have been won or lost based upon The Game Plan.

Your coach must be able to give you a plan or a road map to follow on your journey to business success.

Your coach must be able to help you analyze at “half time” (monthly, quarterly, or yearly) how your game plan is working and whether you should stick with the game plan or devise a new one.

All too often, I believe, we don’t stick with the game plan long enough.

A coach can help us with that but having a mentor as well would be helpful.

A mentor is a good sounding board and may not be an expert on the skill you are learning.

A good mentor listens to you and asks the questions that help you to go deeper into your own thoughts and ideas.

In my experience, people are more than capable of making their own decisions than we give them credit.

What they need is someone who listens and asks helpful questions.

That is a skill that a good mentor will have and when you find someone like that you will be blessed.

A good mentor will be above the confusion that we sometimes experience.

I lived in a small town in the foothills of Colorado. I could look out over the plains for hundreds of miles. Often I saw a blanket of clouds on the prairie while the sun shined on me.

I knew that those living out on the plains did not see the sun. All they could see was fog or cloud cover. Eventually, the Colorado sun would burn off those clouds and the people below would see the same sun I saw.

When we are stuck with a problem in the process of learning a skill we feel like we will never get it. A mentor isn’t stuck in that process and can encourage us that we will see it too.

But sometimes a good mentor will confront and hold us accountable.

A good mentor is someone who you trust with your long term goals.

And they will remind you of those goals when your actions seem to be working against those goals.

Suppose I have started a new weight loss plan and have committed to a healthy diet and exercise plan for the next six months.

My mentor and I have talked about how it will be hard but that I have a realistic plan that should bring results – if I am faithful to the plan.

I have shared with my mentor that I want to improve my blood pressure and cholesterol levels because my mother died of heart disease when I was young. I want to be there for my own children.

But after a month of being faithful to the plan I get discouraged and start “cheating.”

My mentor sternly but gently asks if I still want to be there for my children.

That question leads to a conversation about why I hadn’t kept to the plan.

We decide it was too rigid and I allow for little “cheats” and I recommit to the plan thanks to a mentor that cared enough to confront.

I know how valuable mentors and coaches are because I have found a team of them.

Yes, a whole team of mentors and coaches.

Do I Dare? One innovative mom’s solution to distractions.

Do I dare put a sign up for my mom that says –

Unless there is blood don’t bug me?

Wait! Before you judge me.  Let me explain by going back a couple of weeks.

I started reading the book Deep Work by Cal Newport.

The subtitle is what convinced me to buy the book – Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World.

Oh, how I need help with the distractions in my life.

I’ll bet you do too.

Deep Work has valid ideas about how we work in the 21st Century.

But, I wasn’t far into the book when I knew that I wouldn’t adopt most of what the very intelligent author was advocating.

I probably won’t put it on my list of suggested personal development reading either.

Because Cal Newport would have me unplug from computers, the internet, and social media in a major way.

That is not happening.

Not while I am using my computer, the internet, and social media to build my team, my business.

Still, I have gained understanding about the nature of distraction and the value of working without distraction.

I will just apply that understanding more like Cari Higham does.

My distraction is 94 years old.

Cari’s distractions are in the 4-year-old range.

But distractions are distractions no matter the age.

The question is how does one get undistracted time?

Enter Cari Higham’s recent email.

Her subject line read: Don’t bug me unless there’s blood.

It’s an attention getter for sure.

So, Cari doesn’t care for a 94-year-old mother but she has a couple of boys that are in the four-year-old range.

Cari knows distraction.

And how she deals with it is telling her sons don’t bug me unless there is blood.

Actually what Cari does will be helpful for you no matter what your distractions are.

She has a kitchen timer and sets it for 30 minutes.

She tells her sons that they are not to bug her for that 30 minutes.

Unless there is blood.

They understand what that means. And they don’t feel unloved by her. They understand the boundaries of time as defined by the timer.

The timer is also a boundary for Cari. She knows that she has to focus on the task that she needs to accomplish in the next 30 minutes. She knows to eliminate the distractions that would keep her from completing that task.

The buzzer at the end of the thirty minutes is a reminder to Cari to get up and move around and do other things that are healthy for her.

She mentions exercise and drinking water – lots of water – not sugary drinks but water.

So, I will need a sign for Mom. She won’t remember what the timer is for unless there is a sign.

And I don’t think I need to mention blood.

But I’m going to get the timer and I’m going to have a sign that gives me 30 minutes of time to focus on my business.

Because I will be working on my computer and the internet and social media are connected, I will need to use the do not disturb function that my computer and phone have.

Because one email or post notification can pull me away from my work and lead me down a time decimating rabbit hole.

I am also going to get the water that I need when the 30 minutes is up. 

Too many days I forget to drink enough water.

Cal Newport in Deep Work would rather my undistracted time be eight hours I think.

That kind of undistracted work is a great idea for some people. 

But today I will take this quote from Deep Work and apply it to my 30 minutes at a time undistracted work:

Psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihaly emphasizes the advantage of cultivating “concentration so intense that there is no attention left over to think about anything irrelevant, or to worry about problems.”

I applied this while tackling a particularly difficult project recently. It had ended in failure for me twice before but this time I decided to try this kind of intense concentration.

And I succeeded.

For me and Cari Higham, it will be more than enough to practice this kind of Deep Work in 30-minute intervals.

The Three Acts of Your Call to Greatness

You already know the road to becoming a successful network marketing distributor is full of twists and turns.

And it can get kinda bumpy here and there, too.

Luckily, you’re not the first to take the journey and those who’ve come before you have left clues to reach the top of the mountain.

And while everyone’s path is different, there are three distinct stages of growth everyone will experience while building their organization.

Before we discuss these entrepreneurial milestones, though…

Let’s play a game

You’re about to read the story of someone you know all-too-well.

Someone who’s a household name; someone you grew up idolizing.

And make no mistake…

This special someone’s story is KEY to unlocking a never-ending flow of leads, sales, and profits on your own journey as an entrepreneur.

That said, I bet you won’t know exactly who I’m talking about after reading the next 40 lines.

Let’s see if you can prove me wrong!

Our special someone grew up as a nothing-special young man (though a tad odd) living a regular, boring life…

In a regular, boring town.

He yearned for an change, an adventure, a day that wasn’t like all the rest…

Knowing that he didn’t want to wind up like everyone else—grey, tired, and jaded.

Did his family understand him? No.

Did they encourage his dreams? No.

In fact, they told him to fall in line—to play it safe, to learn his place…or else!

One day, though, something different happens…

A mysterious stranger arrives and invites our young man on a quest out of boring, status quo town.

Yet, he hesitates.

He’s afraid, uncertain—what will this mean?

Is there any going back to how things were?

The pain of staying is too great and his desire too strong, though.

Home isn’t an option anymore—he’s outgrown it.

But once he departs…

His WORST fears materialize


The path is NOT easy.

The world is a harsh realm filled with dangerous denizens, and he doesn’t know if he has the strength to face all its challenges.

Luckily, he’s not alone.

Mentors guide his way.

He meets challenge after challenge and opposition after opposition, until…


He hits a wall.

There’s never been a test like this—

It’s paralyzing…overwhelming…insurmountable.

And at this moment, when defeat is imminent, the journey is in dire jeopardy, and all hope is lost.

Until, on the precipice of failure…


A life-changing insight—

shocking truth that rocks him to the core

Immediately, nothing is the same.

He experiences profound clarity; his latent abilities are unlocked.

Everything “clicks.”

Now, the challenge isn’t so great.

That wall isn’t so high.

And he now makes short work of scaling it.

After that…

The boy is a man.

Now he may enjoy the rewards of his quest (…though they aren’t quite as he originally imagined).

He returns home.

The familiar is now strange.

The journey is complete.

The story is over.

And the world is a better, forever-changed place.

So, the question remains…

Who’s our brave protagonist, our triumphant hero?

Any guesses?

  • Luke Skywalker? Harry Potter? Frodo Bagginses? Simba?
  • Katniss Everdeen? Ellen Ripley? Sarah Connor? Rey?

Okay, ready for the answer?

All of the above.

And many others.

Now what does this mean, exactly?

Well, let’s take a moment to explore…

The cross-cultural “Hero’s Journey”


You might already be familiar; if not…

Allow me to introduce Joseph Campbell, a mid-20th century mythologist and scholar of comparative religion.

Campbell’s ideas of a “monomyth,” articulated in The Hero with a Thousand Faces, examines the universal themes of mythical heroes from around the world…

Embodied in such ancient characters such as Odysseus, Gilgamesh, Siddhartha, Inanna, and many others.

And as you read above, these themes are just as prevalent in entertainment today as millennia ago.

In fact…

George Lucas deliberately used the structure of the Hero’s Journey when writing the Star Wars trilogy.

The writers of Lost wove Campbell’s themes into each character.

And films like Harry PotterThe MatrixAladdinThe Lion King (Hamlet for kids), and many, many others all heavily “borrow” from the mythic tradition.

Cool, huh?

Why is the Hero’s Journey so universal and captivating?


Because it speaks to the human experience—to the desires and challenges we ALL face along our journeys.

And these themes are most prevalent when you want to do something…


Much like becoming an entrepreneur.

Think about it…

Most people want to play it safe and not strike out on their own.

Most people want security, not the responsibility of blazing new trails.

Entrepreneurs are different


Entrepreneurs are agents of change.

They don’t blame the economy, their boss, the President, or what their parents did or didn’t do when they were kids.

They realize no one else will “fix” their situation.

And they certainly don’t wait for permission to pursue their passion or create the life they deserve.

Does this resonate with you?

If you’re reading these words, I’m guessing it does.

You didn’t sign up for a life of mediocrity.

And even if your business isn’t where you want it to be today

You’re not going to work 50 hours a week until the day you die for someone else’s benefit, living paycheck to paycheck, counting pennies into your golden years.


If your reply is “that’s right!” then you’ve answered the call of entrepreneurship.

And in doing so, you’ve laid the foundation towards building a network marketing business…

And there’s no going back.

You’re never going to be content to watch others get all the glory while you’re sitting on the sidelines.

So to guide you along your way, we’re going to break down…

The 3 Acts of your Entrepreneurial Journey

Aristotle once said (paraphrasing) that stories have a beginning, middle, and end.

And the Entrepreneur’s Journey is no exception.

Here are the three acts:

  1. Separation (the Call to Entrepreneurship),
  2. Initiation (the Road of Trials), and
  3. Return (Cresting the Summit).

Once you understand the journey, you’ll be able to guide yourself and other folks through it.

You’ll soon see how mentorship and becoming a mentor in turn are integral to the process.

Let’s begin.


The journey of every entrepreneur starts with desire—the desire to live life on one’s own terms.

All that matters is that you refuse to settle and you refuse to quit.


Because it’s tempting to be complacent and live an average life.

That’s easy.

And let’s be real—building a network marketing business is hard.

Unless someone wants it somethin’ bad, they might hear the Call…but they’re never going to set foot on the Journey.

“The Call” is about the iron will to show up in the first place.

Here’s a word of encouragement…

It’s not about hitting a home run the first time you’re at bat.

Just ask Bill Gates.

Before Microsoft, Gates started a business to create reports for roadway engineers from reams of raw road data.

The business wasn’t a success.

Far from it, in fact.

But what’s important is that Gates answered the Call.

And his entrepreneurial DNA ultimately led to the founding of Microsoft and the largest net worth in the history of the world.

That doesn’t happen working for someone else!

Here’s the reality of the situation…

Failure to start is why most people ultimately fail

Most people listen to their “inner critic”—their limiting beliefs, the pain of their past experiences.

They say things like…

“I’m not good at math; I’m not good at writing; I don’t have a natural talent for selling.”

All that junk.

But at the end of the day, that’s all it is—junk.

  • Richard Branson is dyslexic.
  • Jerry Seinfeld was booed off stage during his first gig.
  • Henry Ford went broke 5 times before founding Ford Motors.

Etc., etc.

(I’m sure you’ve heard dozens of such stories before.)

So no—failing a few times does not excuse you from success.

Once you’ve heard the Call, there’s no turning back from building a network marketing business.



Most people fail to successfully build a network marketing business.

That’s no joke—most ventures (like 9-out-of-10) end up making NO money.

And even when you’re doing well…

Sooner or later everyone winds up in what Campbell calls the “Belly of the Whale.”

An unknown, dangerous territory where anything can happen…

  • Neo swallows the red pill and wakes up in the real world
  • Frodo is captured in Shelob’s lair
  • The Millennium Falcon is detained by the Death Star
  • Harry and Dumbledore enter Tom Riddle’s cave

In entrepreneurial life…

It’s when you face the difficulties of building a network marketing business.

And yeah…

You WILL face them—ask anyone who’s achieved success.

People will “hate.”

Some will reject you—brutally.

Even your friends and family will caution you, often with the best of intentions.

And even when you achieve success, the Journey’s far from over.

Now there’s going to be a target on your back.

People are going to want what’s rightfully yours.

That’s life.

“Gee,” I can almost hear you ask…

“Can I skip all that with a mentor to guide me through!?”


Well, the answer is “no.”

And that’s the way it should be!

Here’s why…

Yes, you DO need a mentor; having one is key to your success when building a network marketing business.

After all…

  • Steve Jobs mentored Mark Zuckerberg.
  • Maya Angelou mentored Oprah.
  • Heck, even Mother Teresa was mentored by Father Michael van der Peet.

Who knows if all those people would be successful without their teachers?

Your mentor is your strategist and most honest critic.

But he or she is only there to guide you—to point the way, not to lead you through the Belly of the Whale.

That you do alone.

To succeed…

You must concentrate your desire to shine light into the pitch-black unknown that is your future.

But we cannot provide the desire, the WILL to follow-through and achieve your dreams.

That’s on YOU.

The final, though never complete, phase of your journey…

Is becoming a leader and mentor in your own right.

Perhaps paradoxically…

Along the way you realize your journey isn’t about you or your needs.

Heroes and entrepreneurs alike aren’t serving themselves.

No, they serve a higher calling of service to others.

In business, your key insight is to discover the needs your prospects don’t yet know how to satisfy for themselves without your help.

Read that one again.

And hey, they might not even know what they need.

After all, who needed an iPad before it existed?

Who didn’t need an Apple Watch until after it existed? 😉

Or, how about this…

A Xerox think-tank invented the personal computer, complete with a mouse and point-and-click interface.

But the executives couldn’t understand how they would help anyone make better copies.

They were stuck in their own dying paradigm.

So the technology was shelved until Jobs and Gates came along to essentially steal these ideas.

Crazy, right?

Not everyone has the vision or courage to see what will best serve the market.

In this stage of the Journey, your ego is your biggest adversary.

So here’s your objective…

Give people what they need to reach their goals


Become the Obi Wan to their Luke…

The Hagrid to their Harry…

The Gandalf to…

Well, you get the picture.

See, facing your own challenges, trials, and the Belly of the Whale qualifies you to help others do exactly the same.

And that’s how you help other people get what they want.

Which is the key to reaching your own goals.

Like Zig Ziglar said…

“You will get all you want in life if you help enough other people get what they want.”

Thus, Act 3 of the journey is all about helping others and providing value.

That’s the heart and soul of any successful business.

At the end of the day…

We’ve all got to slay a few monsters to get to the top—and we need all the help we can get.

For example…

Jobs was booted from his own company in the early ‘90s, went through the challenge of co-founding Pixar, then came back to Apple and turned it into the behemoth we know today.

That’s one man’s Journey.

Naturally, he didn’t do all those things alone.

And neither did any other fictional or entrepreneurial hero.

Life isn’t a solo act.

It’s a team effort.

Your third act is all about inspiring others and guiding them through their second act.

Providing value to others is what makes you a leader

And creates deep, lasting abundance in your life.

  • Act I – The Call to Entrepreneurship
  • Act II – The Road of Trials (with the help of a mentor)
  • Act III – Cresting the Summit (through service to others)

This model is universal, older than the pyramids.

  • The first act is all about desire—you’ve got to get off your butt and take action.
  • Act II is about perseverance and having the humility to learn from others.
  • The final act is cultivating leadership and providing value to others to receive your ultimate reward.

And how do you become a mentor?

How do you engage in leadership?


You’re not a leader until you’re leading.

Leadership is a verb

Do We Control When We Retire?

Reaching retirement may require more than following the pathway of our parents’ generation.

It used to be that if you got a job with a solid company you could count on having a job and retire with a modest but adequate retirement.
But today, according to a recent analysis from ProPublica, 56% of workers over 50 have been pushed out of the longtime jobs.
That is appalling.
Worse yet, only 10% of those workers end up making as much as they did before.
Some don’t find employment at all.

But how can you protect yourself?

First, of course, you need to know your rights.

There are guidelines under The Age Discrimination in Employment Act.

The act basically says it’s illegal to discriminate because of age.

It is illegal but hard to prove or prevent.

Another way to protect yourself is to keep your skills fresh. It isn’t safe to regard your job as a sure thing today. No matter what your age is.
Unfortunately, changing rules require a change in approaches.

Today more and more people are looking to a side hustle.

My side hustle story goes like this.
It was my decision to take an early retirement at 64. My only plan was to care for my mom.
I knew that Social Security benefits would not be enough. I just trusted that God would provide. I assumed that I would write and sell an article here and there. I had already written a novel and was considering whether to send it to publishers or not.
I was correct in assuming God had a plan. I just didn’t think it would be a side hustle. Not that I had heard that term yet. And I sure didn’t want to do network marketing – which was my first side hustle.
But God laid it out before me so clearly that I knew I had to move forward with it.
My side hustle has blossomed and although my primary job is as a caregiver I am giving daily attention to the side hustle that now includes network marketer, affiliate marketer, and coach.
All three fit together as one. They complement each other and allow me to do things that I enjoy.
My side hustle requires that I invest time and money.
I consider it a long term venture.
Many side hustles won’t replace income immediately. The ones that I consider worthwhile are actually business ventures. And a typical business needs time to become profitable.
So when considering a side hustle ask yourself if this is something that will take time to create the income you need. And are you willing to wait? And will you still enjoy it six months from now?
I found a list of 99 Side Hustle Business Ideas You Can Start Today (which has grown to 119). Some of them I wouldn’t touch with a ten-foot pole. Doubtless, there are others that you wouldn’t touch with a ten-foot pole while I might. Find the list at this link
Many of the ideas on the list will be a good fit for you but go ahead and read it through. See what you think.

Keep in mind the old African proverb, Dig the well before you are thirsty.

Many of these ideas will take time to develop. Some will require investing financially.
Some have the potential of becoming your main source of income with the investment of time and income; diligence and consistency.
The sooner you find your best fit and work it the better.

Three Things You Need to Grow Your Network Marketing Business Online

It turned out, taking my network marketing business online was much easier than I thought it would be and WAY more fun!
Five years of doing things “old school”, I had grown a modest residual check.
I had called my “list” multiple times to get that result. I switched to stalking folks at the mall and servers in restaurants. I got good at engaging strangers. But. like my family and friends, most of them didn’t want to do “a pyramid thing.”
I held home meetings and hotel meetings. I hosted lunch meetings at a local restaurant,  attended all the company events, and drove thousands of miles. I did not want to quit. But I was pretty much done with “old school”.
And then a little ad on Facebook got my attention. It claimed that I could grow my business online.
Yes, it clicked on it and what I learned made so much sense. I knew that I had found a better way. I said goodbye to “old school” and never looked back.
True, there is a learning curve, but fortunately, it isn’t that hard. In fact, I enjoy what I do. I’ve met a bunch of people who are committed to my success – people like my mentor Ferny Ceballos.

If you’re tired of prospecting friends and family, doing home meetings, cold calling, chasing after everyone you meet, or being accused of peddling some “pyramid thing”…

Nine months into my network marketing business, I had recruited 17 people into my business and ALL of them had quit!

I had held home meetings at my mom’s house, friend’s houses, stranger’s houses, attended company events, regional events and after literally tens of thousands of miles driven and $10,000 in the hole, I was about ready to quit.

It was pretty embarrassing and I absolutely DID NOT want to face the “I told you so” from anyone, so I took a leap of faith and started searching the internet for answers!

By the grace of God and maybe a little luck, I found the website of someone who had built his network marketing empire almost completely online and thus began my journey into Online Network Marketing. I was saved!

Long story short, after 10 years and millions of dollars in income later, I thank God for the online mentors I’ve grown with because they literally saved my life!

And today, as my mentors did with me, I devote much of my time today showing others how they can take their network marketing business online and let go of everything you currently don’t like about building the old school way.

Now, if you want to build your network marketing business online, here’s what you need to know…

First of all, the benefits are YYYYUUUGE!

  • You can generate fresh, qualified leads from wherever (and whenever) you please
  • You can end rejection forever by only talking to people who are highly interested in your offer
  • You don’t need to drive long hours, your startup costs are low, and your business works for you 24/7—without you ever having to pick up the phone!

The best part is that you don’t need to be “techie” or particularly good with computers to get started.

There are three steps required to take your business online, starting with…

Now, I know people have different attitudes as far as personal development and mindset goes.

But my advice is pretty practical.

First, you must get comfortable with the unknown.

Basically, you need to be present and respect the journey.

Know that you’re not going to learn everything you need all at once, in one fell swoop.

When you go online, you’re learning a whole new skill set.

Almost a new profession.

Think of it…

When you learn a new profession, what do you usually do?

Well, you go to school for four years.

We’re not going to have you do that, and it probably shouldn’t take four years, anyway.

However, if there was a school of building a business online, it probably would take a few months to get through all the coursework, so be prepared for a learning curve.

Don’t try to learn everything at once.

Just focus on what’s in front of you.

Master that, implement it, and then move on.

You have to get comfortable with not knowing what’s ahead.

There’s always going to be a new technology that you don’t know about, and new skills that you have to acquire.

Keep that in mind and expect the unknown.

But the other issue is a biggie and comes up often:

It’s the ability to overcome adversity and not give up.

By going online…

Do certain parts of building your business become easier?


That’s the purpose of going online—to create more efficiency, so you’re not doing things that either waste time or you simply don’t like doing.

  • So no more driving around town to get from point A to point B.
  • No more meeting people one-on-one.
  • Or following up over and over after they’ve seen “the plan.”

However, you are still going to face adversity.

You’re still going to hit roadblocks and get stuck.

If you’re somebody that easily gives up when you encounter those types of things, then don’t even try to build your network marketing business.

You have to respect the new skills you’re learning

And be willing to face the tough times.

Respect means when you actually get stuck, you don’t easily give up.

You push through and become resourceful.

An important part of the equation is knowing where to go to find answers or knowing who to ask to find answers (more on this later).

This is vital to your success.

The last thing is…

You’ve got to overcome peer-pressure

There are people that are not going to approve of you doing something that’s different from what they recommend within the company.

Maybe someone in your upline doesn’t want you to explore other methods.

That’s normal.

It’s normal for people who have not built their business this way tend to have a negative attitude.

Human beings fear of the unknown, which is why the first thing I told you was: master the unknown.

It’s natural for people to fear what they don’t know

Not only is it natural to fear the unknown, it’s natural to attack it too.

Know that your upline—even if they have a massive downline—if they haven’t built a business online, then they’re talking about something they don’t truly understand.

Building a business online is completely different than building it offline.

It requires different methods and an entirely different skill set.

Building offline is something you can admire and appreciate—and I certainly do—and respect anyone that’s done it.

But if a leader hasn’t done anything online, and they’re talking ‘smack’ about it, then they have no credibility in my book.

Respect them, but don’t give in to their doubt and fear.

But in today’s day and age, more and more leaders in the network marketing space are starting to accept that you can actually build on social media and using Internet marketing, and the proof is in the pudding.

You see people everywhere who are successfully building online.

The proof is all around you.

You don’t need the approval of anyone else

Move forward no matter what others say to you.

Our community provides a lot of support as it relates to this, and we can offer you advice based on your personal situation.

This sums up mindset:

  • Master the unknown.
  • Learn how to overcome adversity (and not be a weenie).
  • Learn to overcome peer pressure.

Those three things will come up, but now you can be prepared.

And there are primarily two different ways that you can build your network marketing business online.

Active social media recruiting

…which you can actually implement right away.

With social media recruiting, you honestly don’t have to learn much of anything.

All you need is a personal account on Facebook (no website required), and some sort of process—may be provided by your upline or somebody in your company—on how to present your opportunity and convert prospects into either buyers or new reps.

You only need to know where to take them, and how to process them.

You can start implementing social media recruiting strategies today to build your network marketing business.

In fact, this strategy is basically equitable to what you’d do offline, except you’re transposing the process online.

The challenge with social media is you’re always busy…

  • You’re always posting.
  • You’re always engaging.
  • You’re always interacting with people.

It produces results quickly (and it can produce massive results), and you can duplicate it quickly, but it’s time intensive.

Most of the time…

People will move beyond simple social media recruiting stuff because they want to create more leverage in their business and to free up more of their time.

Six Easy Steps to Make 2019 Your Best!

Congratulations! You have already made the best step towards an awesome 2019. You aren’t waiting until New Years Day!

But that is a bonus. I had the same inclination and pulled out my tried and proven Smart Goals Worksheet this week. Then I did a little research and found some timeless truths for us from the master of personal development – Jim Rohn.

So don’t quit reading until you’ve gotten to the end because I have a gift for you.

Here we go:

Your Success in 2019 Step 1 – Find the Right Plan for YOU!

Have you struggled because you are trying to use the plan that works for your upline?

That is what I did for several years.

Maybe you, like me, have had some success doing what your upline is doing but you have to force yourself to do it.

Starting today, don’t wait for next year, give yourself permission to be true to yourself and who you and your values are.

There is more than one way to build a business. Unfortunately, it is sometimes hard for the person who has found their successful way to build to believe that it won’t work for everyone.

But, one way doesn’t work for everyone.

This is what Jim Rohn said:

So what plan is the right plan? The plan that fits you. Each of us is unique and motivated by different factors and you’ve got to develop a plan that is right for you and fits you. Some plans will not be as intricate as others, but we all must have a plan, along with goals in that plan, to move us along. If you are a free spirit, don’t tell yourself you are going to spend two hours a day with a book and a journal. It probably won’t happen and you will just get discouraged. Whatever your personality, your strengths and your weaknesses, develop the plan around them. This is not a one-plan-fits-all proposition.

Keep in mind that I will favor strategies that work for me. I do share ideas that I consider and discard so you may hear what will work for you. But if you can’t see yourself doing what I do. Find someone who is doing what you can see yourself doing and follow them.

One last point – I want to clarify that I am not implying that our plan shouldn’t take us out of our comfort zone.

If your plan doesn’t stretch you how can you expect to grow. It’s the truth!

Now for Step 2 in Having Your Best Year Yet – Set the Times for Implementing Your Plan!

If your life is strictly regulated this is easier than if it is unpredictable.

A schedule will work for some, while more flexible guidelines may be what you need.

What I have is a DMO – daily method of operation. With input from mentors, I have a daily to-do list.

Do yourself a big favor and keep your schedule or to-do list doable.

If you are like me, you will watch a new video of someone achieving phenomenal success. What they are doing sounds great. Their success certainly is attractive.

So, I adjust my DMO to what they are doing. It goes great. My excitement builds. I can see success bursting on the scene by the weekend!

Then I hit a wall.

strugglingI can’t continue at that pace. I am burning out after only a week for Pete’s sake. What a wimp I am!

Then I had an aha moment. You see I am single and I was listening to a lot of couples talk about what they do.

With one couple the husband is very techy – I am not – the wife likes to write – that is me.

In another couple, one is an extrovert – which I am not.

But my aha moment came when one husband mentioned that his wife slept in because she was up until 4 a.m. working on a presentation.

I realized she could do that because she had a partner who would get the kids off to school.

I don’t have a partner. Maybe you don’t either.

Or worse yet, you even have an unsupportive partner perhaps.

Whatever our situation, we need to remember this. Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Start with a schedule that you are sure you can do day after day, week after week, month after month.

Then when you master that you can add activities one at a time.

The important thing is to know what you plan to do and then do it. Consistently. Persistently.

I recommend Jeff Olson’s book The Slight Edge. It will build your belief in the value of consistently doing the easy things that will bring success.

Step 3 is Keep a Record of Your Daily Activity.

Your record can be a spreadsheet where you record your daily activities.

Or a journal might work better for you.

If you prefer the spreadsheet leave room for comments about what is working and what isn’t working. Be sure and write down new ideas that you want to incorporate in future activities.

I currently use a journal for recording what I do and a spreadsheet for planning my weekly activities. The spreadsheet is easiest for me to organize what I need to do for the coming week but it doesn’t allow room for the notes I need to take.

So, I record what I do each day in a journal. And that introduces the next step.

Step 4 to Your Most Successful Year Is to Take Time to Reflect.

In my journal, I also evaluate my day briefly. I answer these three questions:

3. What three things worked today?

2. What two things didn’t work today?

1.  What one thing might I do differently?

At the end of a week, I can use those questions to further reflect and the same for every month and year-end.

Here is what Jim Rohn says about the importance of reflection:

Take a few hours at the end of the week to reflect on the week’s activities. Also during that weekly time, take a few minutes to reflect on how this material should be applied to your life and circumstances. Take a half day at the end of the month and a weekend at the end of the year so that you’ve got it, so that it never disappears, to ensure that the past is even more valuable and will serve your future well.

Step 5 Is Crucial to Your Success – Setting Goals.

When you create your DMO, daily method of operation, you need to have a way to determine if you are successful. Goals are how you will measure your success. Keep in mind that success for me will be far different from what you consider success.

Think of it this way. Your DMO is your roadmap. But a good roadmap always has a destination in mind. Your goals are your destination.The future must be planned.png

You also need to have a clear idea of where you are at, don’t you?

The goal-setting process may need to keep that in mind.

For instance, if your goal is to reach the highest level of your MLM company and you have rank advanced halfway to the top, your goals for 2019 will be different from the goals of your new recruit.

Your new recruit may be thrilled to reach your level by the end of next year but you won’t.

Success Step for 2019 Number 6 – Act on Your Plan!

Can you imagine having your holiday planned, you’ve got it mapped out, booked hotel rooms, and purchased tickets for the zip-line adventure or Broadway show and then staying home?

Of course not.

So it is with our plan. We can’t imagine spending time setting goals and developing a daily method of operation and not following through with action.

But, it happens. Doesn’t it?

How do you ensure that it doesn’t happen to you? Let’s let Jim Rohn give us his answer:

What separates the successful from the unsuccessful so many times is that the successful simply do it. They take action. They aren’t necessarily smarter than others; they just work the plan. The time to act is when the emotion is strong. Here’s what happens if you don’t: The Law of Diminishing Intent. We intend to act when the idea strikes us, when the emotion is high, but if we delay and we don’t translate that into action fairly soon, the intention starts to diminish, diminish and a month from now it’s cold and a year from now it can’t be found.

Mel Robbins’ Five Second Rule explains how our brains are actually wired to keep us from acting. It sounds crazy but our brains seek to avoid danger by shutting down new ventures.

So, to get around our brain’s sabotage we need to act within five seconds.

You’ve read the need for making a plan.

It’s time for action. And if you don’t do it in the next five seconds your brain will start making up ridiculous excuses for not taking action.

Do We Have What It Takes? Three Things to Build and Keep Confidence

One of the unspoken questions that your prospects have is “will this work for me?”Will this work for me_

Before you and I can effectively answer that for others we need to establish that it will work for us.

Of course, when we reach the pinnacle of our company we will be sure that it works for us.

But how can the brand new distributor have that kind of confidence?

Fortunately, the brand new distributor has enough excitement pulsing through their body that confidence is automatic.

But after the excitement has worn off how can you help them to keep going?

How do we keep the confidence going for ourselves when we experience a setback?

Here are three things that you should be doing on a daily basis to keep going when the question “will this work for me” haunts you.

Always be reading/listening to a good personal development book/audio.

Jeff Olson has this rule. Read ten pages a day. That is part of The Slight Edge that he Read ten pages a day!.pngwrites about in the book of that name.

Ten pages will be easy to do. And it will be just as easy not to do.

But if you stick with it you will be filled up with new ideas, new confidence, new mastery of what you are doing.

There are many good books. Your upline is reading a good book and would love to recommend it.

When you read a book the author often has a list of recommended books. So consider those recommendations.

Sometimes an author has written more than one book. If you like the one book you may want to read others by the same author.

I have read many so-called personal development books and not one of them was a waste of time.

Usually, the one I like best is the one I am currently reading.

Here is a short list of books I am impressed with:

  • The Slight Edge, by Jeff Olson
  • The One Thing, by Gary Keller
  • The Five Second Rule, by Mel Robbins

Ask others for their short list. And get started reading ten pages a day.

If you start reading The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson you will learn quickly the importance of doing positive, easy to do actions on a daily basis.

The difference between success and failure is doing.

Not doing great things occasionally but doing simple often mundane things that do not seem to make a difference. And doing them consistently day after day.

That is how you achieve success in time.

However, it is also how you feel confident in the beginning. I find great confidence boosting from doing my daily activities. When I let up I feel my confidence diminish. When I am busy doing my daily activities my confidence grows.

Once you understand the power of daily activity that moves toward your goal you will be confident in what you are doing.

So you must make a list of your Daily Method of Operation. Your list should have three or four daily activities that are easy to do.

When making your list you want it to be activities that will produce results. You want them to be activities that attract prospects or establish contact with prospects or followup with contacts. In other words, you want them to be activities that will build your business and earn income.

Here are a couple of examples:

First, if you are working primarily offline to build your business:Add five names to your database%2Flist.Call three people on your database%2Flist.Make appropriate follow-up calls..png

  1. Add five names to your database/list.
  2. Call three people on your database/list.
  3. Make appropriate follow-up calls.

These are the three things you would do consistently every day whether you felt like it or not. They are simple, easy, and don’t take all of your day. They are doable.

You will still go to company events, hotel meetings, home meetings, one on one meetings. These are important activities but you wouldn’t do them every day.

If you faithfully do your three daily activities you will see results. When you start you will not be good at it but you will get better. And they will work for you. If you do them faithfully.

I believe this even though I never experienced it. I never experienced it because I never faithfully did it.

I hated doing it. And it is a good thing I discovered attraction marketing using the internet.

I also attend company events as often as possible. But much of my training and interaction is online since I need to be at home with my mom.

When I started this DMO I was awkward when engaging with strangers who commented on my posts. I am better these days and know that I will get even better.

Confidence came first when I knew that I had a limitless number of people I could contact on the internet.

Second, as I daily, consistently, faithfully worked my DMO I gained confidence. I knew I was doing what was necessary and what would work.

Where are you headed?

I am pretty sure I know where you are headed.

In fact, here is a diagram I want to share with you.

I am reading The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson. At the end of the chapter Two Life Paths, he asks Where are you headed? And inserts the diagram pictured above.

Jeff asserts that as we move through our life we are always in motion. Not just forward motion but we are also on an upward path or a downward path. It may seem like we are on an even keel but not so.

“In a constantly and rapidly changing world like ours, you simply cannot remain the same as you were yesterday. You are in motion – you have no choice in that. But motion in which direction? You have total choice in that.” Jeff Olson, The Slight Edge

He demonstrates in the diagram that at first there doesn’t seem to be any great difference between the two paths. But as you continue on either path the differences increase.

It is Easy to Do and it Easy Not to Do.

In earlier chapters, he explains that The Slight Edge is doing easy, often mundane, actions that seem to be unimportant in the success of our life’s goals.

They are easy to do and therefore seem unimportant and therefore they are easy NOT to do.

And we find ourselves on the downward curve.

Your friendships and relationships
Your personal development
Your finances
Your career
Your positive impact on the world

Your health – are you making choices with diet, exercise, sleep that are improving your health?

Your happiness – are you choosing to be happy or dissatisfied?

Your friendships and relationships – are you taking action to nurture relationships with others in your life?

Your personal development – are you reading books, watching videos that are growing you?

Your finances – are you living within your means, is your net worth growing?

Your career – are you growing in the skills of your work, are you making a bigger contribution in your personal effort?

Your positive impact on the world? Is the world a better place because of you and is your impact growing?


Use a Pencil (not a pen – remember, everything changes)

That is very good news.

This book, The Slight Edge, came out of Jeff Olson’s personal experiences. He took the slight downward path more than once.

And he recovered each time by taking the slight upward path.

It takes time. But change is inevitable.

So, make it the change on the upward path.

It will be easy to do.

And just as easy not to do.

I said at the beginning of this short article that I was pretty sure that I know where you are headed.

That is because you are reading this article. Not that this article will make or break your success. But it is one of the small, easy actions you can take to grow. After all, you could have chosen to play a computer game.
