In the Bleak Midwinter

Posted by

This is such a bleak title for a beautiful Christmas carol.

Here is a Youtube video of a comforting King’s College Cambridge Choir performance of In the Bleak Midwinter, one of my Christmas favorites.

Although it is considered a Christmas carol, I enjoy this music and its message year round. It offers us hope when we are in the bleak midwinter of life .

Today, December 6, 2016, in Southeastern Colorado we received a light dusting of snow. It is bitterly cold and there is a dreary cloud cover. It is bleak midwinter.

But the lyrics of this song bring us the hope of joy because they remind us that the Lord Jesus came to a bleak winter of sin. He came as the sin cure.

We really aren’t sure of the date of His birth. But without His coming our future would be worse than bleak.

Christ offered life with hope minus the bleakness. It is a free gift to all who “open” it. All He asks is our heart.¹

Here are Christina Rosetti’s lyrics:

In the bleak mid-winter
Frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron,
Water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow,
Snow on snow,
In the bleak mid-winter
Long ago.

Our God, Heaven cannot hold Him
Nor earth sustain;
Heaven and earth shall flee away
When He comes to reign:
In the bleak mid-winter
A stable-place sufficed
The Lord God Almighty,
Jesus Christ.

Enough for Him, whom cherubim
Worship night and day,
A breastful of milk,
And a mangerful of hay;
Enough for Him, whom angels
Fall down before,
The ox and ass and camel
Which adore.

Angels and archangels
May have gathered there,
Cherubim and seraphim
Thronged the air –
But only His mother
In her maiden bliss
Worshipped the Beloved
With a kiss.

What can I give Him,
Poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd
I would bring a lamb;
If I were a wise man
I would do my part;
Yet what I can, I give Him –
Give my heart.

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,”and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.
